Driving a Load Beyond the Capabilities of Arduino’s Output Current

Each Arduino output pin can only supply a maximum current of 40mA and a voltage of 5V.

To drive a load beyond this voltage and current, you will need a driver circuit where the transistor acts as a switch.

To drive devices beyond the transistor’s voltage and current ratings such as mains appliances or high power LEDs, you will need a relay.

Find out more about relays here.
